About Akiak

Akiak (Akiaq in Central Yup'ik) is a Yup’ik Eskimo village with a reliance on subsistence and fishing activities. It is located 42 air miles northeast of Bethel on the Kuskokwim River and has about 405 residents. Akiak means "the other side," since this place was a crossing to the Yukon River basin during the winter for area Yupiit.

Precipitation averages 16 inches in this area, with snowfall of 50 inches. Summer temperatures range from 42 °F to 62 °F. Winter temperatures range from −2 °F to 19 °F.

The airport has a gravel runway, measuring 3,200 feet long by 76 feet wide. The strip provides chartered or private air access year-round through Yute Commuter Services and Ravn Air Alaska. Snowmachines, ATVs, and boats are used extensively for local transportation to nearby villages.
