Grades 7 & 8 All Subjects

I was born on March 29, 1971, in Palmer, Alaska. After graduating from Chugiak High School in 1989, I attended art school where I earned a degree in graphic art. During the spring of 1998, I completed my student teaching, and later that year I began my teaching career. Since that time I have taught all levels of students in grades K-12 including serving as the primary teacher in both K-5 and 6-8 fully self-contained classrooms. In addition to this, I also started a Waldorf K-8 charter school within the Anchorage School District where I served as principal for twelve years.

Outside of my profession, I am the proud mother of three boys ages 20, 16, and 13 who attend school in Anchorage. During my free time, I love to read, draw, paint, sew, learn new things, garden, cook, bake, pick berries, renovate my home, etc.

Waqaa from Akiak. I started at YSD in 2009-2011 as the principal of Tuluksak, and had very fond memories of the community then. I am back in the district and looking to make some more cool memories, increase the capacity, sustainability of the school and community.

I work with students from Pre-K through 12th grade. I have three beautiful, handsome children Ray, Axel, and Nelson Jr with my loving husband Nelson Sr. I have lived in Akiak my entire life except for two years where I attended AKJCC in Palmer, Alaska where I studied and received my certificate as an Office Assistant.

I have worked at Akiak school for many years on and off since my two older children were small babies. I love working and being around the students. They bring joy and positive energy not only to me but to the school atmosphere.

Karen Brown- [email protected]

SPED Teacher

I am the Pre-K through Grade 12 Special Education Teacher at Akiak school. This is my 2nd year working for Yupiit School District. I have taught K-8/Special Education for close to 30 years.

I enjoy teaching all over the world and learning about different cultures, languages, and traditions. My experiences include teaching from the hot, sandy beaches of Abu Dhabi, UAE to the ice cap mountains of rural Alaska.

One observation I have found from my years of teaching is that children and parents are very similar. Children yearn for knowledge, love, and acceptance; and, parents want the best education for their child(ren).

Furthermore, I enjoy singing, playing the piano, and cooking. If you need to reach me, please do not hesitate to contact me.
